Marsh description, Maine Natural Areas Program - click on picture

Grand Marsh Bay is part of an extraordinary natural environment. The Bay connects to the historical Cobb Marsh and indirectly to Corea Heath. This ecologically unique complex plays host to numerous rare and threatened plants and animals. The area comprising Grand Marsh Bay is designated protected water fowl feeding habitat, shorebird nesting habitat, and an area of historical significance. It is common to see great blue herons in the grasses of the marsh, or to see osprey or a bald eagle fly past.

Corea peninsula is rich with wildlife. Red foxes and porcupines can be spotted along the roads at night, a beaver dam is located along Grand Marsh Bay road, bears have crossed properties, and even a rare coastal moose sighting is reported. The upland area is dominated by spruce and birch with occurances of white pine, hemlock, and tamrack typical of the woodlands in the region.

Grand Marsh Bay is a tidal environment. Water depths can differ by up to 15 feet between low tide and high tide. When the tide is out grasses, rocks, seaweed, and mudflats are exposed. Clam digging was common in the past. When the tide is highest, water in the Bay can be over 30 ft deep. The aquatic habitat supports fish, shrimp, crabs, jellies, and a host of other creatures. Seals have been observed swimming all the way to the Marsh. Tide Tables and Charts
